What Companion offers

So we’ve explained what Companion is but you’re probably wondering what it looks like when it comes to an actual project. Here’s a tidy summary.

1
Simply tell us what you’re after and we’ll search our artist networks for you or access our diverse listing of creative talent from within the Choreus Community. Got your own artists in mind? BYO and we’ll help you through the rest.
2
Work with people who speak your language. We can translate any notes into a workable brief. Whatever information you bring to us, whether it’s from you or your creative team, our producers can turn them into a clear creative brief and actionable feedback.
3
We’ve spent years tweaking and developing a suite of simple (but effective) workflow tools and software specifically for creative project management. They not only respect your existing processes but provide you with clear presentations and paperwork as well as defined milestones, deliverables and revision blocks.
4
Our terms may be informed by industry best practices, but they’re in plain English. This protects you and the artist and ensures everyone’s on the same page and looked after.
5
Whether you use our third-party project management tools or keep it all in a mega-long email thread, our producers are overseeing every step so you can focus on your core role.
6
Save yourself the hassle of multiple communication channels. Companion provides a single point of contact for every artist you’re working with, keeping all brief, billing and project information together.

A global team to help you bring your project home.

Meet the Choreus team of agents and producers — the translators, negotiators, calculators, communicators and people who make projects happen. They also happen to span three different countries and continents, meaning we not only bring global experience to each project but can easily adapt to suit your timezone.

For Artists & Creatives

Choreus is your key to on-
demand project management.

Wish you had an agent to quote, manage and liaise for you across an entire job? Try Companion. Maybe you’re after specific, one-off expert advice? Consult’s got you. Or join a live network of creatives and submit your work for clients to see with Community. With three service tiers, Choreus covers every creative need.

Companion

On-demand project
management for freelance
artists.

We do the admin so you can do the art.

Not all artists want full-time agency representation, but sometimes we all need a hand. If a project’s got you questioning quoting, keeping revisions under control or engaging third party suppliers, Choreus can step in. Our Companion service can take on as much or as little client communication and negotiation as you need at every step of the job. We’ve negotiated thousands of contracts, navigated the most ambitious briefs and handled endless kinds of clients — all while helping artists to reduce the risks they face and get commercial projects off the ground and over the finish line.

Here’s how it works —

1
You fill out our form, we review your project details. Once we’re sure we can help, we’ll make it official with some paperwork and then get down to the nitty gritty. We’ll chat with you about the best way we can collaborate on the job, help you prepare presentations or decks, review any preliminary contracts and answer all your questions along the way.
2
Then comes the quote. We’ll work with your client to get all the details on scope, specs, timelines, licensing and everything they might not have considered (even the weird stuff) and get it all laid out in plain English so everyone is on the same page. If you’d like a legal eye to look over things, we have a wide network of trusted professionals we can get on board for an additional fee.
3
Once the job’s signed off, we’ll get you, the client and the brief set up with our project management tools so everything’s in easy reach. You’ll work directly with them on creative and we’ll be there to take care of the rest — keeping it to timeline, managing revisions, rebriefs, logistics, conflict mediation and anything else that pops up.
4
The client gets the final files, an invoice and a clear licensing agreement outlining exactly where and how they can and can’t use your work. They pay us directly and we then transfer your money to you minus our agreed fees. That’s your part done — simple.
5
Once your work’s out and about in the wild, we’ll hunt down samples and get the client’s permission for you to put them in your folio. People see them, people want you, rinse and repeat.

Don’t need us to handle a whole project or just want to test the waters?

What Companion offers

Wondering if our Companion service is going to give you what you need? It’s more than just a liaison point between you and your client. Here’s what else is on offer.

1
We’ll create custom presentations and beautiful paperwork for you so you look like the pro you are and can make sure your client knows it.
2
Creative work is a fickle beast. Clients can chop and change and so can briefs. We’ll make sure your time is covered if anything goes awry and have a paper trail to confirm it.
3
We put together ironclad terms and conditions to keep you and your work protected. Kill fees, cancellation terms, clear scope outlines and definitions, indemnity, liability, warranties and beyond — we’ve got you covered.
4
Unless your client decides they want to front the fee for a complete buyout, your work will be protected by a licence agreement. This ensures everyone’s clear on when, where and how the artwork can be used, as well as the associated costs if that changes.

Ready to roll? Just fill out the form. Submitting a project enquiry is free.
If it’s your first time, start with our FAQ, then fill out the form. Please note, if you’ve been asked to sign an NDA, ensure any details you share with us are in compliance with your agreement. If you’re unsure you’re how to proceed, please read this section in our FAQ.

About Us

Choreus and its services are powered by the seasoned team at The Jacky Winter Group — a creative representation and production company, with offices in London, Melbourne & New York.

The freelance artist’s best friend

Since 2007, Jacky Winter has proudly and fiercely carved paths for talented freelance artists to collaborate with agencies and clients of all kinds. Representing a roster of 100+ artists across the globe, we’ve negotiated and produced thousands of commissions for countless commercial applications.

Wait. Weren’t you called Corvid before?

You’re right. And, while we truly loved that name, it unfortunately put us just one letter away from sharing a title with a certain global pandemic. When we said we’d love our service to go viral that isn’t exactly what we meant so, like most things in 2020, we had to pivot...

How does Choreus differ from Corvid?

In addition to a slight tweak of our artist services (no fees to vet Companion projects, moving the community from Slack to Discord, and more) the biggest change is that we have expanded our Companion and Community offering to creative studios and brands to offer a single point of contact for long-term and/or large scale art buying engagements.

On top of that, our new publicly viewable community database has been developed, which gives clients a bit of insight into the extended network of artists in our Community.

To find out more, visit our new client-specific Companion and Community pages on our landing page.

What’s up with the name Choreus?

Choreus is the latin root of the word “choree”, but that probably doesn’t make things clearer to anyone. A choree is a poetic meter where a stressed (or long) syllable is followed by an unstressed (or short) one. Basically, we take the stress out of your creative projects. Neat, hey?

Having trouble pronouncing it? Kick-off “curious” with “core” and you’re on the right track (which we think is quite lovely — after all, aren’t all artists curious to their core?), but “chorus” works too when you’re all about working together.

Who are you? What qualifies you to be handling these projects?

Choreus and its services (Community, Consult and Companion) is powered by the seasoned team at The Jacky Winter Group—a creative representation and production company based in Melbourne, New York, and London. Since 2007, Jacky Winter has proudly and fiercely carved paths for talented freelance artists to collaborate with agencies and clients of all kinds. Representing a roster of 100+ artists across the globe, we’ve negotiated and produced over tens of thousands of commissions for an infinite variety of commercial applications. At the core of Jacky Winter and Choreus is a devotion to creating a healthy creative ecosystem—one in which artists can thrive and earn a livelihood doing what they love.

Our producers have worked across all sorts of projects—murals, packaging, street posters, live illustration, TVCs, 3D printed sculptures, logos, augmented and virtual reality, fully integrated all-media campaigns, animated GIFs... you name it. Our primary clients are advertising agencies, design studios, publishers, consultancies and often direct to client.

Together we’ve worked with the biggest (and smallest) clients, brands and artists in the world to produce commercial projects that we’re incredibly proud of—not only because of the beautiful artworks we’ve delivered on time and on budget, but also because we’ve worked extremely hard to negotiate fair rates and working conditions for those we represent. We know our stuff!

Is Choreus an agency?

While we were created and operated by an agency, Choreus is not an artist rep in itself. By signing up to our community or engaging in one of our services, you are not committed to us in any way.

In the last fifteen years we have had thousands of artist commissions and come across even more talented artists. All people we would love to help and work with, but the pure math of how many people and the time and resources we had available had previously made this impossible using the traditional representation model.

While the core principals and workings of a full service agency like Jacky Winter still have a firm place in the industry that we are fully committed to, Choreus can act as the inverted model of JW, therefore allowing us to be there when needed for the many artists who could benefit from our services, while at the same time offering further value for our long-term clients whose needs are constantly evolving.

What we believe

At the core of Jacky Winter and Choreus is a devotion to creating a healthy creative ecosystem: one in which artists can thrive and earn a livelihood doing what they love; and where clients can tap into a network of the world’s best talent, with peace of mind they're in the hands of professionals who get it done properly.

Where we’ve come from

Over the last 15 years of Jacky Winter’s existence, we’ve received countless requests from artists outside the roster for help on various aspects of their careers and projects. As one of the only groups with the experience and know-how to help them, we’ve long considered how to bring that knowledge and support to a broader commercial art community, where full representation isn’t needed or feasible.

How we do it differently

That brings us to Choreus. While Jacky Winter remains an artist representation agency, catering to longer-term relationships with a select number of creators, Choreus flips the old model on its head to provide on-demand production services to freelance artists, and by extension to our current and future clients.

Inverting the traditional representation system, Choreus takes the full suite of custom tools developed by Jacky Winter to facilitate creative production and, most importantly, a team of dedicated specialists who have collectively negotiated and produced tens of thousands of commissions.

Their experience in the creative industries is broad and their commitment to production runs deep. Our producers are fluent in both languages of artists and clients. They’re the translators, negotiators and people who make it happen. They look after both sides of the commercial equation—taking care of business so the artist can focus on the art and deliver the best possible outcome for the client.

FAQs

I’m a writer/illustrator/archeologist/musician/photographer. Is Consult for me?
Our expertise lies in the production of original visual art, but (sadly) not photography at this stage. So if you’re an illustrator, animator, crafter or any other sort of image-maker creating original artworks for commercial clients, we’re the right people to give you answers. Not sure if your practice fits into these categories? Email us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
What sort of things can you help me with?
We’ve taken all the things we’re asked for help with most and turned them into three key services you can book through Choreus Consult: Choreus Consult: 1) Pricing Guidance, 2)Folio Reviews and Career Advice, 3) Assistance with Project and Client Management. Below is a breakdown of what might fall under each service. Pricing Guidance How much should you charge for a project? To price something you have to take into account all sorts of things—the style of work, delivery specs, who the client is and how they’re going to use the artwork, market rates, schedules—and a bunch of other really important stuff. We can help you figure out what to charge for your artwork and licences based on many years of experience in doing just that. It’s professional guidance based on industry standards. We’ll assess the project from all angles and talk you through your options. Folio Reviews and Career Advice Knowing what to put in your folio and how to present it is hard. We’ll take a good look at your folio and assess its strong and weak points and anything that may be missing. We’ve had a lot of years in this industry and work with all sorts of clients and projects. Let us know what your goals are and we’ll help you work on what you should be doing to achieve them. Project and Client Management Advice In the middle of a project and not sure how to handle it? We’ll help you figure out how to get the best brief out of a client, manage their various requests and revisions, get over the hurdles that come up during production, deal with client conflicts—or anything else that might be stressing you out.
What platform do you use for consults?
To fit into everyone’s schedules all consultations are held over Zoom. If you prefer an alternative venue, like a good old-fashioned phone call, we can do that as well. We follow up all consults with an email outlining the discussion, so you have a record you can easily refer back to.
How long will my consultation go for?
It depends on the service you book. We’ve set time limits individually for each one, to make sure there’s time to give you everything you need. Specific information on the duration of each session is provided in the booking form. Please note, the times listed are maximum times and some appointments may run shorter if everything you need is covered off in the allotted time.
Who will be providing the consultation?
When you book your appointment you’ll be assigned to the next available producer in your time zone. If you wish to speak with a particular team member, please email us in advance at choreus@jackywinter.com. All of our producers are highly trained in commercial art production and have years of experience in dealing with all the questions, complications and intricacies of the industry. Either way, you’re in great hands.
Are you lawyers?
The Choreus team of producers are not trained lawyers. However, we have seen, reviewed and negotiated thousands of contracts in our time, so we know our stuff. We can provide you solid general guidance, but for ultimate peace of mind it’s best to have things vetted formally by a lawyer. In cases where this might be needed, we can arrange this for you as an add-on with our fabulous legal eagles at Media Arts Lawyers.
I need an appointment ASAP. How soon can I book one?
We have a minimum booking window of 4 hours, to allow time to get across all the information you’ve provided and come back to you with advice. Appointments are held during standard business hours, but with offices in Melbourne and New York we cover a lot of ground. During the booking process you’ll be able to see the next available appointment time for your preferred producer. If you need help sooner than what’s displayed, send us an email at choreus@jackywinter.com and we’ll do what we can to help.
How can I make sure you’re able to give me the best advice?
We want to make sure we make the most of your appointment, so it’s super important you give us as much information as possible when booking. Your producer will be reviewing everything you’ve sent through in full detail before the call, so that they can be ready to give you as much helpful information as possible. Be sure to be clear about any specific questions you want answered and give us as much information about the project, client, or your work as you can. The booking form outlines the questions we need you to answer. When in doubt, the more information the better!
Will you speak to my client for me?
No. Choreus Consult is a direct appointment with you, so we can help you figure out the best way to manage projects and clients on your own. However, if you’re looking for someone to handle discussions and negotiations with your client on your behalf, you’ll want to check out our Companion offering! This is a more comprehensive service for those situations where you need a full-time partner by your side.
What languages and territories do you work in?
We have offices in New York (USA), Melbourne (Australia), and London (UK). Despite our attempts at Italian language tapes, our producers are fluent in English only. We have, however, worked with English-speaking clients across the globe and can give advice on a variety of markets.
I’ve had to sign an NDA for this project. What am I allowed to share with you?
If your client has had you sign an NDA (a non-disclosure agreement), any information you share with us must be kept general enough so you don’t breach the agreement. We aren’t liable if you breach any clause of your agreement. If you’re ever unsure, check with your client first. A word of warning—we’ve seen an increase in NDAs that sneak in dangerous clauses such as usage and IP grabs. Please make sure to read your NDAs carefully to ensure you don’t sign away your rights before you have any information about the project. When in doubt, seek peace of mind by checking with a lawyer.
